Play Streets scheme

Screen Shot 2016-07-08 at 16.36.35Some of us have been discussing the possibility of closing Wilton Square and some of
Baring street regularly to allow the local children to play on the streets freely as part of Islington council’s Play Streets scheme. I have had the form for this for a while, however, the council suggest that we organise a residents’ meeting to discuss the finer details of this plan before we submit the request to them. The next deadline for doing this is August 31st.

We will be arranging such a meeting towards the end of July and let you know the details shortly but meanwhile please have a look at the relevant materials:

  1. Really good idea – hopefully the scheme is easy to do – I assume it’s about encouraging games on the street or dare I say it a game of mini football ?

  2. Exactly that- giving space for the kids (and grown-ups!) to play freely and ride bikes etc. without fear of being run over.

  3. Hi Merje I have no objections to you closing your end of Baring Street as I can use the other side but my mother is disabled and I have to have access to my house in Wilton Square at any time day or night for her. Also my neighbour at no 18 is disabled and relies on taxis to take her anywhere and bring her back. Rita Buck 19 Wilton Square

    1. Hi, thank you for raising this! I believe it would be good to discuss these matters in person as I’m sure there will be other concerns to address before we carry on.

To your particular concern, the streets would be closed for a maximum 3 hours at a time but local residents would still have access as the barriers would be manned for the whole three hours so could be opened to give access for taxis and anyone local needing to get in and out. Essentially, the road would only be closed to through traffic. I hope that makes sense?
